9 Most Common Feng Shui Mistakes Homeowners Make

Even if you don’t believe in the ancient practice of feng shui on home design, a lot of the teachings still makes total sense.

In layman terms, feng shui concerns the designing of a house so that it can harness the metaphysical energy that is all around us. This includes things like:

  • furniture arrangement
  • color themes
  • floor planning
  • etc

In fact, most followers of feng shui did not give it any thought initially. But once they realize how great their homes look and feel after following the teachings of feng shui, they become avid fans.

Yet no matter how well-versed you are on the topic, you will still tend to make some mistakes. Here are some mistakes to take note of. Even if you don’t believe in feng shui, you might want to avoid these mistakes as well… as they really make common sense.

1) Sleeping or sitting under a beam

I’m no architect. So I can’t understand why houses these days are still built with exposed beams along the ceilings. With centuries of practice in home building, you’d think that professional planners and builders will have already figured out how to hide horizontal support beams in a house.

The worse thing is that these “things” are often situated in bedrooms and living rooms.

This means that should you position your bed without giving it a lot of thought, you’ll every often end up sleeping with your head under a beam. This is like directing negative energy into your head every time you are sleeping.

The same can be said for sofa sets in a living room with exposed beams on the ceiling.

You can either:

  • hide the beam by building a false ceiling or false wall
  • re-arrange the furniture
  • re-built the place if possible

2) Having an entry door that faces the washroom

You don’t need to be an expert feng shui master to figure out that looking into the bathroom every time you enter the bedroom, or any room, is disgusting.

This is like having to face the brunt of negative energy every time you enter a room.

You can setup a divider between the 2 doors so that the washroom is hidden visually whenever you step into a room. Otherwise, the least you can do is to keep the door to the washroom closed all the time.

3) Having a protruding corner facing the bed or sofa

The bed and sofa is specifically mentioned here because these are the furniture where you spend most of your time in. In effect, this applied to any area where you spend a lot of your time in.

No matter how beautiful a selection of sofa set is, a protruding corner directs sharp piercing energy towards wherever it is pointing at.

Some professional feng shui practitioners would even guarantee that you’ll fall sick very often if you have a layout like that at home.

A common way to neutralize this is to place a tall plant at the protruding corner so that it hides the corner altogether. Another way to handle this is to build cabinets along the wall so that the corner is moved to another location or totally eliminates from the house.

4) Not having enough lighting

Light fixtures are not that expensive and usually affordable to most households. So don’t hold this back just to save a few dollars from your remodeling budget.

Cozy and warm lighting is becoming very popular in modern homes. This is without mentioning the various types of cove lights and down lights that create ambience. However, you should also install bright lights that give life to a home.

Surely you’d prefer to read the papers under bright white lights too?

Lights play the important role of “activating” energy present in the many different sectors and areas of a house. Without it, you would be able to reap the benefits of positive energy even if it is present in the house.

Don’t sacrifice practicality for beauty.

5) Sleeping with window behind your head

Sometimes we arrange beds this way because of space and layout constraints.

But whatever the reasons, it is detrimental to the well-being of the person sleeping in this position… at least in terms of feng shui bed placement.

This is like sleeping without support, without a backing, which makes the person prone to bad luck and vulnerable to misfortune. It should be avoided at all costs.

The best remedy to this is to re-position the bed. If not, use powerful blinds that remain tightly closed when you sleep. Or full length curtains that fully hides the window.

6) Mirror in bedroom facing the bed

Some people build mirrors that face the bed because it makes them feel sexy. Others might find this a spooky setup.

Having a mirror facing the bed is like bringing another person into the intimate part of your life. This translates to the possibility of third parties making an impact on your relationship with your partner.

You’d want to remove the mirror if you intend to maintain a happy marriage without third party influence.

7) Clutter

I believe that nobody likes clutter. And many homes remain a mess simply due to laziness.

Even though a lot of people can tolerate clutter to a huge extent, all of them would probably prefer to have everything in the house nicely packed and clean… as long as it’s not their job to do housekeeping.

Being clutter free:

  • makes the place easier to clean up
  • makes it easier to find your stuff
  • lesser places for pests to hide
  • makes it pleasing to the eye
  • and more

From a feng shui perspective, clutter is a huge source of bad energy. It scrambles good energy and harnesses the bad.

It’s like a whirlpool in the ocean. Packing up your stuff is suggested.

8) Sink opposite the stove

As homes, especially apartments are getting smaller and smaller, this predicament is becoming a very common occurrence.

In the logic of feng shui, the stove is fire based and the sink is obviously water in elemental nature.

This is like igniting a confrontational war right in the kitchen. And is a very bad omen for wealth luck.

It would be fine if they are diagonally opposite. But it spells trouble when they are directly opposite.

You need to relocate either one of them.

9) Windows that allow wind straight through the house

Because of air circulation, sometimes homeowners open their windows on both sides of the house to allow the wind to enter and leave directly. This orientation of having the windows on both side facing each other can allow wind to enter and exit at a high velocity.

Although this might be a good method of airing the house an removing weird odors, it is bad feng shui.

It is like stabbing a knife right through the house. You don’t need to be a genius to figure out that that is a bad sign.

You can get a taste of how deadly this energy is by placing something between the 2 facing windows when the wind is blowing. Fixtures can sometimes be blown over.

To fix this, do not allow both windows to open at the same time. Or for a better fix, re-position one of the windows so that it does not face the other directly.
