9 Favorite Diet Foods That Actually Make You Fat
Who wouldn’t want a leaner meaner body?
And if you can enjoy the food you love while shedding a few extra pounds, only your ego is standing in the way of weight loss… or is it?
The health movement has been in full swing for years. And since this is what the consumers demand, big food corporations are inevitably going to come up with things that satisfies that demand in their billion-dollar research labs.
The problem these days concern whether what is put into supposedly healthy and diet foods are… actually unhealthy.
I’m not really a health freak. But I am health conscious when buying and consuming food products. In fact, I’ve just came back from the supermarket and realized that the “healthy” foodstuff I had loaded my trolley with are actually not that healthy because of their contents.
What an irony that diet foods could be what’s stopping me from shedding even 1% of body fat. You could be in the same predicament as me.
And here are some of the pretenders.
1) Yogurt
I used to hate the taste of yogurt when I was a kid. But adulthood must have rewired my taste buds while I was unaware. Because on a faithful day, which I cannot remember when, I took a mouthful from my mother’s cup. And I was in awe of how delicious it was.
It was then when my delirium over yogurt began.
These days to get an edge over rivals in the highly competitive frozen foods market, food manufacturers create “better” and “healthier” versions of yogurt to attract the attention of consumers.

Now you can even find yogurt ice cream…
However, things like “low fat”, “sugar free”, “contains real fruits”, etc, are pretty misleading.
Yes these claims have to be backed up by science. But what is really happening here is that they are highly processed.
To remove the natural contents of yogurt while keeping it’s lovely taste, additives have to be added to the mix. Or else, it would taste like cardboard.
So even though it might be fat-free, the artificial sweeteners can make you fat just like what fat will.
2) Salad

Don’t have a salad for the sake of having a salad
It’s not really the salad that is unhealthy. How can a bunch of vegetables be bad for your nutrition?
It’s the dressing.
Because raw vegetables might not taste so great when they are not as fresh, we often top it off with out favorite dressing.
But who are you kidding?
Using salad dressing you find at the supermarket shelves defeats the purpose of a healthy salad dish altogether. Now unless you are having salad for it’s taste rather than it’s contents, you could be consuming a very unhealthy meal. Not just that, they could contain a lot of calories too.
The best way to go about this is to prepare your own dressing. Use healthy ingredients like extra virgin olive oil, condiments, etc.
3) Fruit juice
What better way for a lazy person to absorb the hearty nutrients of fruit than to drink it?
Fruit juices are healthy… provided you have prepared them from your own juicer.
Commercial fruit juice packed in cans, bottles, and paper packaging, are seldom good for you.

They might look the same, but are often not.
Marketers also play with words to make them seem healthy.
- “Contains real fruit” could mean that it contains 1% fruit.
- “Sugar free” could mean that it is loaded with additives.
- “Fat free” could mean that it is packed with sugar.
It is a real war zone out there in retail stores.
If you truly want to have some of the goodness in fruits to aid your diet, either eat the fruit or juice it yourself.
4) Bottled and packaged tea
Almost every bottled drink you can find in a supermarket is loaded with sugar or substances alike.
Just like fruit juice, they can contain “zero sugar”, or the like. But the resulting drink from the lack of sugar often has the same harmful effect on the body.
Tea for example is generally known to be a good drink that detoxifies and nurture the body.

Real tea don’t come in a bottle
Green tea especially, has a reputation as a superfood and taste great as well. So you might be proud of yourself for replacing your regular soda with green tea.

Can you believe? |
However , the amount of artificial flavoring being dissolved into these drinks will defeat your whole purpose of a diet.
They can contain an obscene amount of calories… bringing you back to zero.
The same can be said of diet versions of soft drinks.
5) Microwave diet meals

Don’t let the organic looking rice fool you
Because of the fast-paced life we are living nowadays, convenient microwave meals have become a common site in supermarkets and convenience stores. To take that up a notch, some are specially prepared for weight loss!
The lean meat might be low fat, the vegetable could be greener than you’ve ever seen, and the small portion prevents you from overeating.
But in order to make these “meals” tasty enough so that the manufacturer does not lose you as a customer or life, they have to add additives like MSG and salt. Otherwise you would never try it again.
If you don’t already know, these things can trigger reactions in your body that make you look fatter then you really are.
6) Vegan food
I don’t think you need anymore evidence to see that it’s not about vegetables or meat that makes someone obese. Because I think you, like me, have vegetarian friends who are overweight.
It about how the food is prepared that makes the difference. This is why you can see bodybuilders stuff themselves with an impossible amount of food, yet retain their low body fat.
Again. It’s about how your food is prepared.
A veggie burger sounds harmless… and surely be less unhealthy than a regular burger?

Veggie… and just as sinful
Think again.
Yes, it might contain less fat and cholesterol compared to meaty burgers. But it might also contain more calories than a regular burger.
7) Sushi
What better way to lose weight than to go on a sushi spree. They are delicious, fresh, often raw, and never deep fried.
I love sushi and it really pains me to include it in this list. But as sushi becomes fancier by the day, chefs have designed their own versions of “western” sushi that include cheese, mayonnaise, mustard, and the lot.

The sauce is what hurts your diet
Just as it is with salad, these additional sauces will turn a weight loss regime into a weight gaining feast.
8) Healthy snacks
We all know that the potato chips and nachos are going to cause the belly to bloat.
So health-conscious ones will go look for healthier snacks that keep our mouth busy while not packing in the weight.
We might then land on things like sunflower kernals, dried fruit, green peas, etc.
This is really subjective and requires you attention. They might be healthy. But the way they are prepared can cause a problem to your diet.
For example, such snacks can often be coated with fat gaining substances that improve it’s taste.
If in doubt, read the labels or only buy those that are plain without added flavoring.
9) Gluten free food
When you see “Gluten free”, you tend to perceive a food as diet enhancing. That is not always the case.

Gluten free… so what?
Knowing how well “Gluten free” is selling, food manufacturers are flooding the market with junk food that are gluten free. This allows you to enjoy the pleasure of munching on your favorite junk foods with registering the guilt that often come with them.
But again. Just like a lot of the stuff mentioned previously, what manufacturers use to substitute the gluten with so as to retain taste, will make your weight control journey a waste.
The only gluten free food that you should consume are those that are naturally gluten free. Processed food really don’t add that much value to your weight loss program. They just leave your mystified with a lack of results.
Read the label
It can be a tricky place to navigate in the supermarkets when you are seeking foods that presumably will help you lose weight. When you are unsure, always read the labels for the actually contents in the product. It certainly says much more about what you are putting into your body than “sugar free”.
