9 Most Underrated Rock Bands Of The Roaring 90s

most-underrated-rock-bands

We are all too familiar with the big famous bands like Bon Jovi, U2, Oasis, etc. It seems like every single they release get well received by the public. Having a huge fan base alone can take your songs to number 1.

But while the success of these big rock bands are deserved, there are a number of very good bands that don’t get the acclaim they deserve.

Here are 9 of them, in no particular order, that are absolutely awesome… yet underrated and did not get as big as their counterparts.

#1 Firehouse

At a time when heavy metal seemed to linger in all young minds, Firehouse came along with their big hairdos and introduced their version of rock and roll. Their stuff is oddly unique. It’s hard to describe what exactly is the difference between their music and other bands. But if you are a follower of theirs, you would probably agree with what I said.

I heard that they are a really good live band too. The song that put them on the map…

My favorite song from them. I remember having this song accompany me in my Walkman during the days of skipping school. How this did not become a worldwide hit I don’t know.

#2 Collective Soul

Their first real hit was just so-so in my opinion. I thought that this group would disappear after that album. Little did I expect that their engines were just getting started… slowly revving to warm up. Because their following releases only became better and better. I’m so glad they did not stop. That would have deprived me of some of their captivating brand of music.

The song that started it all

Their best song in my opinion is

#3 Toad the Wet Sprocket

I’ve always knew about them but never dug deeper into their music. That was until a day when I saw them perform “Fall Down” on a talk show. After which, I didn’t think twice about picking up their album Dulcinea. There was gold inside. What contained in that album blew my mind… to the point where I picked up all their previous albums as well. Amazing stuff.

The track that won them a global audience

My favorite…

This is a tough one. I absolutely love a number of their distinctive songs. But if someone tells me that I have to choose 1 favorite in order to attain world peace, I will have to go with…

#4 Gin Blossoms

It is a travesty Gin Blossoms was not as huge on a global scale as they were in North America. They had humble beginnings and made it big. Who don’t like a happy feel-good story.

The song that made people sit up and pay attention

My absolute favorite. I listened to this over and over again during some tough times.

#5 Suede

Suede is a band from the UK that was pretty unknown for a while. They were churning out good music but their releases were mostly not appealing to the masses. That was until they released this seductively catchy song that took the whole world by storm. It’s my favorite from them too.

#6 Silverchair

When I first heard their breakthrough single on MTV, I felt that it was too loud to my liking. Maybe I didn’t take them seriously because they were kids. But as the radio started to play that song more regularly, it really started to grow on me. Then I realized that the radio stations were playing the song at a low sedated volume. When you turn up the volume on this one… the song sounds better by 10 times. It’s like getting your soul pulled into a rock concert.

At that point, I still felt that they are a typical example of a one hit wonder.

This is THAT song… the drums really got me… FAT BOYEE FAT BOYEE…

Boy I was so wrong about them. Because from the same album, track after track, the melodies were so addictive that I found myself playing their songs in my head throughout the days. Unbelievable rhythmic head banging stuff on some tracks.

Their music has “matured” these days. But let’s not shortchange them on how good they are.

My favorite… HAADIN HAADIN…

#7 Michael Learns To Rock

I don’t have the numbers. But MLTR could possibly be the biggest band ever not to have superstar status in North America. Tune after tune, track after track, album after album, the guys from Denmark were pumping out beautiful music like a sausage machine. Their songs seem to have a pattern to them and usually comes with choruses that you just have to sing along to.

Most of their songs have mass appeal. And this was the one that started it all.

MLTR is definitely a band that should have got more acclaim for their music and achievements. Their longevity is testament to that. This is my favorite from them.

#8 Goo Goo Dolls

This was another band that I did not take seriously… until the radio keep playing their breakthrough song over and over again. One day while I was in the kitchen, it was as if the guitar solo flipped a switch in me. And I realized just how good that song was. I actually ran down to the record store to buy their CD album. Yes… I was around when CDs were the thing…

This is the one. Check out the unusual yet hauntingly mesmerizing guitar solo towards the end. I remember hearing it even in my dreams.

Most people would have probably heard their most famous song from the soundtrack to the movie City of Angels.

#9 Soul Asylum

Many music lovers actually think that Soul Asylum is a one hit wonder. This is not surprising as their first big hit will probably remain as their biggest ever. Everything after that pales in comparison. Not the best way to start of…

How can you not have heard of Runaway Train

But their followup singles are actually pretty good. They deserve more recognition and a little justice. I remember watching some of their performances on talk shows and was struck with awe.

Think I’ve left out another more deserving band from the list? Come tell me about it. And share this with your friends. They need to learn what great music they have missed out on all these years!
