9 Good Reasons To Hold A Wedding On Chinese New Year
Planning a wedding is one of the most laborious task that couples will undertake.
For some people, it can even be the most hectic and stressful task that they will take on in their lifetime.
And one of the big decisions that has to be made is choosing the wedding date.
This simple looking decision can seem like an easy one to those who have yet to tie the knot. But it is a decision that has to account for various factors such as:
- Will the couple be able to take a leave of absence from work
- Will it be a convenient date for the most important guests who would be invited
- Will it be an auspicious date
- Will guests who have traveled a long way have ample time to arrive
- Will there be enough time to get everything ready
- etc
Maybe you can start to see why some people are willing to spend a fortune on wedding planners… So that they can delegate the headaches to someone else.
If your wedding date is going to be in the early part of the year, you might have considered holding the event on Chinese New Year (CNY) itself.
And there’s good reason why you should give this option serious consideration.
1) You will save time from not having to visit relatives for CNY
Let’s admit it. While we go around visiting relatives and friends to share the festivities, a part of you actually feels that it is a chore to do so. Especially when the uncles and aunts you are visiting are relatives who you’ve hardly spoken to at all.
A visiting schedule that could take up a few days can possibly be struck off your calendar if you hold your wedding on Chinese New Year.
This is because everyone will be coming to your event instead of you going for visits.
2) You can expect bigger red packets
One of the most iconic practices of CNY is the gifting of red packets by elders to the younger generation.
I won’t be surprised at all if this is the only thing you would look forward to for the tedious travels required for visiting.
Yet you must be aware that once you get married, you will lose some of those red packets you have been collecting from married couples because you are now of a similar stature. To make matters worse, you are now culturally obligated to give away red packets to those who are younger and unmarried.
If you hold your wedding before CNY, this means that you are entering CNY as a married person. You will then have to forfeit some red packets and have to give out more.
By holding your wedding on CNY itself, you can retain your receiving status for one last time.
And since you are combining 2 festive events into one day, many seniors in your seniors will probably feel that they should give you a BIGGER red packet than usual.
You are one sneaky fella for even talking about this 😀
3) Mega family gathering
While families get together for dinner on CNY, it is not often that mega get-togethers that involve the whole family tree do it.
If you manage to pull this off, you could go down in family history as the lead honcho who organized such an event successfully.
Imagine all your related families looking through joyous photos of this event years or even decades later. And see that it was your wedding that made this possible.

Can you believe? |
As odd as this might sound, a Chinese wedding IS an event significant enough to warrant for the appearance of all members of a family tree. Even more so than a funeral.
So are you ready to become a prominent member with the family tree?
4) Auspicious day
If you are Chinese or marrying Chinese, then you must have already come across the subject of auspicious wedding dates.
CNY is an auspicious day for celebrations. Fullstop.
5) Nobody is working
You can also forget about worrying if people will be free. It’s a public holiday.
If your invitees don’t RSVP, then it’s not because they have work to do. But decided to use CNY as an excuse not to attend your big day.
Remember that this is the first day of the new year. So reunion dinner was the night before. This means that CNY itself would be a day with no obligated dinner gathering within inner circles.
So this is also an opportunity to see who are the people around you who values your friendship.
You might think that it’s not “friendly” to ask people to make compromises for you. But if you think about it from another angle, if ever you want people to compromise for you, this is the type of event that they should do so.
It’s your wedding for goodness sake.
6) No need to worry about CNY food
The hotel or restaurant you are holding the wedding will be serving CNY menu food items. So this means that you don’t have to go through the hassle of preparing it yourself for your own immediate family.
This also means that you are saving that precious time for the guest at the event too.
So don’t think for a moment that holding a wedding on this day would be inconveniencing some people. While this might be true, many others might be silently thanking you for making their job at home easier.
7) Ready theme
You don’t have to ponder about what wedding dress to put on. If you just cannot decide, then go with traditional auspicious red.
It’s totally appropriate for the occasion. And people won’t be talking about how a gown didn’t suit you, but instead talk about how you donned traditional wear for the appropriate occasion.
At the same time restaurants should be fully decorated in preparation for CNY dinners already. Giving the CNY theme a fully immersive environment.
You don’t have to worry about garden themes or minimalist themes. CNY is your theme and the venue should be all set and ready to pop the champagne.
8) You won’t forget your wedding anniversary
The wedding anniversary will not be the next Chinese new year since CNY dates move about when we reference it to the Gregorian calendar.
Even so, CNY is such a significant festival that you cannot miss it.
This means that whenever CNY is approaching, your anniversary would be approaching as well.
You don’t want your wife to give you a hard time for forgetting the anniversary.
9) Skip the honeymoon… if you want
If you are someone who loathes traveling for one reason or another, I got good news for you.
Because travel fares are going to be unusually high during this period of time, it gives you the perfect excuse to defer the honeymoon to a later date.
As you slowly drag this on and on, you might actually get off the hook!
